Russia Ranks as World’s 2nd Strongest Military, Yet Holds Sole Aircraft Carrier
Russia is one of the countries in the world that has a sophisticated and great military power. Russia is known to have a variety of sophisticated weapons that can be used to protect its country’s sovereignty. But Russia has only one aircraft carrier.
This is certainly very lame when juxtaposed with the United States. Reporting from the Defense Security Asia page, the US is reported to have three aircraft carriers, the latest of which is named Fujian. Meanwhile, Russia only has one aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov.
To note, the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov has a weight of about 58,000 tons. The aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov is capable of carrying between 30 and 60 Sukhoi Su-33 fighter jets.
Admiral Kuznetsov apparently suffered frequent breakdowns so the carrier often spent time at the shipyard for maintenance rather than conducting operations at sea. Foreign media said the Russian ship Admiral Kuznetsov was in a “deplorable” condition.
There are several other countries that actually only have one aircraft carrier, namely India, France and Britain. However, Russia is more famous for its strong and sophisticated military power. So why does Russia, which has the world’s advanced military power, only have one aircraft carrier?
Most likely due to the doctrine of the Russian Navy which does not have extensive experience and knowledge in aircraft carrier operations. So that makes Russia limit its desire to have more aircraft carriers.
It should be noted that Admiral Kuznetsov previously served off the coast of Syria in 2016. But after that, Admiral Kuznetsov was sent to the shipyard to undergo repair work. So that it can be interpreted that Russia is a world military power, but does not have an aircraft carrier.
This is mentioned because the Russian aircraft carrier is currently in the process of being repaired at the shipyard, Murmansk. Reportedly, after experiencing a series of accidents, this single Russian aircraft carrier can return to service and go to sea next year. But Russia’s Ministry of Defense refused to provide any guarantees.
